How to grow with LEDs ?
Indoor gardeners grow fruits and vegetables year-round in a climate and light-controlled environment.
Grow lights overhead mimic the sunlight. As indoor gardeners find ways to be more efficient, LED lighting is replacing HID lights, as they use less energy, and last five to ten year longer than HID bulbs. LED lights produce less heat, eliminating the need for cooling fans, reducing the risk of fire and ensuring that your plants are not scorched under hot lights. Producing a full light spectrum, LED lights set the stage for photosynthesis during all stages of growth. Use LED lights as supplemental lighting in a greenhouse or for an indoor vegetable or flower garden.
1.Measure the indoor garden space to determine how many LED blubs you’ll need. Full sun plants require two LED bulbs per square foot of growing space, while low-light plants require only one LED bulb per square foot. Choose a space for growing that receives some indirect, natural sunlight each day.
2.Install hooks and hang your lighting fixtures from chains over your indoor garden plants. If your plants are sitting inside a shelving unit, install lighting fixtures with screws on the underside of each of the shelves. Attach light fixtures to the walls, vertically, if your indoor plants are particularly dense and need lighting from multiple angles.
3.Install LED bulbs with a blue light wavelength into your lighting fixtures during your plant’s early growth stages, or when you are growing leafy, green vegetation, such as lettuce or spinach. Use blue lights up until the plant is ready to flower.
4.Remove the blue LED bulbs and replace them with LED bulbs that have a red light wavelength. Use these bulbs when it comes time for your plants to flower and fruit. If you are growing flowering or fruit plants and leafy vegetation in the same space, use a combination of red and blue LED bulbs.
5.Attach an automatic light timer onto your LED grow lights. Set the timer so that your plants receive eight to 10 hours of LED light each day. Partial shade plants require as few as five to six hours of LED light per day. If you have a mixture of full sun and partial shade plants, cover partial shade plants with cheese cloth during the last few hours of a full sun cycle.
6.Install more LED bulbs as your indoor garden expands, or as more light is needed. Hang plastic sheets around your growing space, to create additional light without having to install more bulbs. Plastic sheets create a reflective surface that adds more light to your indoor garden.
